Flyphotopher is a company that fills a niche so perfectly and effortlessly that you wonder how and why you never thought of the idea before. The company specializes in vacation photography and is in one word–cool. Their goal is to help capture those beautiful moments during travel that you normally would have attempted with a selfie stick or, worse, missed all together.
I came across Flytographer a few months back and I was instantly drawn to the concept, the company and their overall vibe. I knew I had to book them for our recent trip to Europe and I wasted no time doing so!
Before I knew it, Ben and I were meeting up with Silvia in Amsterdam in the sweetest little neighborhood called Jordaan. She snapped candid photos of us for an hour, we had one *awkward* and hilarious outfit change on a strangers front porch and overall just a really good time. The experience did not disappoint and once we were done, I wanted to scream from the rooftops {or, you know, write in this blog} about how much you need this experience in your life!
Here’s the rundown.
What Is Flytographer?
Flytographer is a canadian based company that connects travelers with local photographer all over the world. They are in most major countries and in cities spanning from Austin and Honolulu to Buenos Aires, Amsterdam, Aruba and Hong Kong.
How Does it Work?
Step one, book your vacation! Step two, head to the Flytographer site, make a login and then select your destination. You’ll be presented with a handful of photographer profiles that showcase their past work and provide you with reviews. There were enough photographers listed that I had a choice of different styles, but not so many where I was scrolling for miles and generally overwhelmed.
Once you find your match, you can reach out to see if they’re available during your travel dates. You will initially communicate through your Shoot Concierge who will respond back within 48 hours to let you know if they’re free. If they are, you can finalize the day and time, choose your package and then submit payment.
Once that’s done, it’s on to the fun part–entering in your shoot details and goals, communicating with your photographer on location and finalizing the plans.
You Mentioned a Shoot Concierge-What is that?
Simply put, a Shoot Concierge is a customer service representative from Flytographer that is there to assist you with the booking process and answer any questions you may have.
You communicate via the Flytographer messaging system and you can can ask questions like, “Can we have an outfit change for an hour shoot?” or “Can we change the time of our shoot due to the rain?” They’ll help you get the details of your shoot situated and will be there throughout the process as additional support.
What Are The Packages and What Would You Recommend?
There are four package options that range from $250 to $650.
- For $250 you’ll get a 30 minute shoot, 15 final photos and one location
- For $350 you’ll get a 60 minute shoot, 30 photos and one to two locations
- For $500 you’ll get a 90 minute shoot, 45 photos and multiple locations
- For $650 you’ll have a 2 hour shoot, 60 photos and multiple locations
It’s hard to say which package would work best since everyone is different, but I would personally recommend the 60 minute shoot. That’s what we chose and it was absolute perfection. It gave us enough time to get comfortable in front of the camera, the ability to have an outfit change and shoot in a few different locations around the neighborhood.
For the other options, I think 30 minutes would be perfect for friends or a couple who are on a budget or who have done photos in the past (so they’re comfortable right off the bat) and the 90 minute or 2 hour shoot would be best if you were with a larger group (family, bachelorette party, etc.) and you’re looking for group and individual shots in various areas around the city.
Proposal Shoot:
Flytographer also does proposal shoots. If you’re looking to propose on vacation (or even if you’re home city) this would be an amazing resource for you. It’s basically like having a built in proposal planner.
Proposal packages are a little more expensive, but do you get some extra bang for your buck. For proposals, the cost is $350 for 30 minutes, $450 for 60 minutes, $600 for 90 minutes and $750 for two hours.
All packages include a planning meeting with a proposal specialist {fancy} and your photographer to make sure they know your vision. If you don’t have a vision, don’t worry, they’ll give you fresh and fun ideas from the hundreds of proposals that they’ve captured around the world. They’ll help you plan the details and provide you with maps and mock-up images for your review to make sure everything is to your liking.
On the day of the shoot, your photographer will be ready to go 10 minutes prior and will shoot your proposal from start to finish. Plus, if you choose the 60 minute {or longer} package you can do some fun post engagement photos directly after. Click here for some more information!
I’ve Never Done a Shoot Before-Was it Awkward?
I was actually asked this question a few times and the answer is surprisingly no, it was not awkward–and we were first timers! It does take a few minutes to get comfortable in front of the camera, but once you get through the initial “where do I put my hands” stage, it’s easy breezy. Plus, our photographer was so sweet and personable, it was like shooting with a good friend.
One of the things I loved about the process was that you could tell your photographer the type of photos you’re looking for ahead of time (candid, staged, fun, flirty, serious) and how much direction you want (none, a little, a ton). It made the process so much easier and more relaxing because we knew we were in good hands.
What Happens After My Shoot?
If you’re anything like me, you’ll check your email every few hours in search of the “Your Photos are Ready” subject line. It typically takes 5 days for your images to be uploaded to the site, but Flytographer will send you a little teaser during that time which will undoubtedly make you swoon and instantly crave more!
Once the photos are ready, you can easily download them or even order prints directly through the site.
And that’s really it! The process is super simple and you’ll leave your vacation with beautiful shots that you’ll have forever.
