If you all haven’t been to The Line Hotel in downtown Austin, then you need to add it to your bucket list ASAP! Once the historic Crest Inn, and most recently a Radisson — this mid-century hotel was purchased by the Sydell Group and transformed into a contemporary work of art that boasts some of the best views in the city.
With modern decor including over 500 unique works from Central Texas artists and an ever changing illuminated sign that hosts staying such as “Fries count as vegetables, right?” there is no shortage of ambiance in this downtown gem.
The hotel also houses the LA coffee chain Alfred whose adorable slogan is “but first, coffee,” a swanky and casual bar called Dean’s One Trick Pony and a restaurant called Alro Grey that has the dreamiest decor and food cooked up by Top Chef season 10 winner Kristen Kishthis.
The most recent edition to the hotel is P6, The Line’s very own rooftop bar that serves creative cocktails and small plates. This little spot is nested up on the 6th floor of the hotel and boasts panoramic views of the city and the South Congress bridge {talk about the perfect place to watch the bats}. The space comes to life with quaint seating areas and day beds, floral wallpaper, pastel colors and lush greenery.
THE EXPERIENCE:
My friend Brittany and I booked a table for 6:30pm on a Friday night in hopes of catching the sunset and let me just say, the view did not disappoint. We grabbed a drink at the indoor bar and then were shown to our table out on the deck. I would definitely recommenced making a reservation if you want to guarantee a table outside. If you’re just swinging by for a drink then a reservation shouldn’t be necessary.
The vibe was very mellow and relaxed and it was still easy to chat even with music playing in the background. Looking around you’ll see group clinking their glasses in celebration, friends lounging on the day beds with glasses of wine, couples snacking on small plates and locals and tourists alike snapping photos of the view.
THE FOOD:
We ended up ordering champagne and wine and then a few small plates to share. First up was the Artisanal Cheese Platter featuring cheese from Antonelli’s {a local shop in Austin}. The tray featured a few small pieces of cheese, some of their signature flat bread, fresh honey and almonds. While tasty, the plate did come in at a whopping $25 a pop. If you’re a cheese lover, then I say go for it, but I also think there are some great alternatives if you want more bang for your buck!
Next we ordered the Roasted Beets which were SO good. The portion was large, perfect for two, and they were flavored with cashew, pistachio and orange. The last two dishes we tried were the Tuna Crudo with charred lemon and grated olive and then the Lamb Tartare. I wasn’t a huge fan of the lamb, but LOVED the flavors in the crudo!
We also saw a ton of tables ordering the Warm Gougeres {a baked pastry made of choux dough mixed with cheese} and it looked so yum! We were stuffed after our plates, but definitely sign me up for that dish next time!
