Last week, Ben and I packed our bags and headed to a tiny cabin in Wimberely, Texas for two days of relaxing, camping (or moreso glamping) and reconnecting with one another.
Even though we’ve been together day-in and day-out since March, we were still craving a break from our daily routine, a change in scenery and a little adventure together. We were racking our minds for a place to go – where was somewhere close, but not too close? And where could we practice social distancing so that we could feel at ease?
Insert Getaway. I stumbled across Getaway when I was poking around looking for glamping spots near Austin. I was drawn to their site from an ad that featured a photo of a girl and a guy sitting in this cute little cabin, staring out into the wilderness from this large gorgeous glass window. I saw it and instantly thought, “I have to be next to that window!”
I took a look at their site and then quickly showed Ben to get his input. He loves camping and has always wanted to live in a tiny home, so when I showed him the set-up, he was sold. We decided to go for it, booked two nights and packed our bags.
The Getaway
Since check-in was at 3pm, we decided to do some grocery shopping the morning of our check-in. We stocked up on goods, drove the hour to Wimberely, found our tiny cabin and quickly settled in.
The cabin was adorable and greeted us with private parking out front, an outdoor picnic table and a personal campfire space. When I opened the door to the cabin, my eyes instantly zoned in on that amazing bed from the photos and I couldn’t wait to cuddle up next to that large glass window!
There was also a little table for two, kitchen with stove top, and a bathroom/shower. We also stumbled upon a drawer of provisions for sale (pasta, sauce, oatmeal, candy) and a bin of firewood outside that was for sale as well. It had everything we needed and we were so excited to get unpacked!
We decided to kick off our stay with a walk around the property. While there were 42 tiny cabins tucked away in the woods, we really didn’t see or hear anyone which was really nice. We did a big loop around the site and then branched off onto a small walking trail. It was like a 100 degrees so we didn’t last long lol but checking out our temporary home was so much fun!
We spent the next two days lounging in the cabin, reading, cooking food by the fire, drinking wine and just enjoying the peace and quite that Getaway provided. It was such a relaxing few days and we weren’t ready to leave!
Questions From The Gram
How was the check-in process?
So simple and Covid friendly. They were in contact with us through email/text leading up to our stay, but 30 minutes prior to our arrival they texted us our cabin name and a door code. Once we arrived, we found the cabin, plugged in the door code and we were good to go!
What did you bring?
I brought enough clothes for a week lol but that’s just me. In terms of clothes, you really just need a few lounging outfits, PJs, hiking clothes, bathing suit (if you decided to visit a swimming spot), and sneakers. Other than that, we brought a ton of food. We didn’t want to have to leave the site, so we brought breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinners to cook over the fire. Oh and don’t forget your drink of choice!
Is there anything you wish you brought, but didn’t?
Yes actually! Two things: Bug spray (can’t believe we forgot that) and a campfire outfit (just like an extra top or something that I didn’t mind smelling like smoke).
Is there cell service?
So it’s weird, but I had full service and Ben had none. I have Verizon and he has an Android with Google’s service if that helps. Getaway provides you with a cell phone lock box and I would definitely recommend using it – service or not š
Is there AC?
Yes #praise
How many nights would you suggest?
Two was perfect for us, but even one night would be fun! Check-in is at 3pm and check-out is at 11am, so it’s not a ton of time, but still fun for a quick getaway!
Do they have food or firewood there?
Yes! They have food and firewood for purchase. You just use what you need and they’ll charge your card after check-out.
They also have everything else you need to cook over the fire for free – a grate over the campfire, lighter, tinfoil, tongs, etc.
What’s in the cabin?
Everything you could possibly need! I mentioned this above, but it has a fully functioning kitchen and bathroom. The kitchen has silverware, pots, pans, plates, cups, knifes, a lighter, kettle, pour over…literally all the things.
Can you bring pets?
Yess! Pups are allowed. They’re $40 additional and you pay when you book.
Is it good for families or just for 1-2 people?
I think both! We had a two person cabin, but there are 4 person cabins as well and those have bunk beds. They look so dang cool and would be perfect for a family!
Is there anything to do there?
When we checked-in they provided us with a map of the area that had everything from hiking trails and swimming holes to wineries, restaurants and shops. There’s so much to do in Wimberely, but we opted for just hanging out at the cabin and relaxing.
If you’re wondering about things to do on-site, then no – there’s not much to do! Ours had a small hiking trail, but that’s really it. I was really nervous that Ben and I would just be sitting there…staring at each other lol but we kept busy!
It’s definitely a reading/writing/card playing/hiking/wine drinking type of adventure if you opt for staying at the campsite!
