I’m a sucker for a good picnic. There’s just something about sitting out on the grass with friends, breaking open a bottle of rosé, sharing tapas and snacks and chatting about the week.
Usually a picnic requires some work though – there’s the planning and the packing and the getting there. There’s finding a good spot, getting set-up and then later breaking it down. The work that goes into organizing the perfect picnic is definitely worth the reward, but when I saw The Wayback in Austin had a Picnic for Two right on the menu, I knew we had to check it out!
If you’re unfamiliar, The Wayback is first and foremost a boutique hotel that’s located only 15 minutes from downtown Austin. They have 8 gorgeous cottages, a pool, cabana and restaurant all on-site. The website looked so dreamy and we couldn’t wait to visit!
So last Sunday, my friend Brittany and I threw on some cute dresses, grabbed our straw hats and headed to The Wayback. It was quaint and quite there; the grounds were plush with greenery and the buildings were colored in calming pastels. It had a very summer in The Catskills vibe and I almost expected Hungry Eyes to start playing and to see Baby and Johnny waltz by.
As we opened the light blue doors to the cafe, we simultaneously pulled out our phones to grab photos of the space – it was so beautiful in there! We snapped a few and then a sweet waitress greeted us and brought to our table outside.
Birttany and I both knew we were there for the Picnic for Two, so we ordered that and a glass of rosé to start. The picnic included a large charcuterie board with meats, cheese, olives, cucumbers and grapes and then two bottles of Richard’s Rainwater. They also brought out a little wooden basket with a red and white stripped blanket, utensils and colorful plates. How cute is that!?
We decided to set-up in the grass for a bit, but loved that we had the option to also sit at a table if it got too hot or uncomfortable. We ended up eating the charcuterie board and drinking a glass of wine on the grass and then moved over to a table to continue the afternoon!
It was such a simple and fun day and I can’t wait to go back again! Whether you’re looking for a getaway, something unique to do for lunch, or just love picnics as much as I do, I would highly recommend a visit to The Wayback.
