A few weeks ago, Ben and I packed up and drove an hour or so outside of Austin to Willow City, Texas to spend two nights at Blue Skies Retro Resort. If you’re unfamiliar, Willow City is minutes from Fredericksburg, Texas which is the sweetest little town filled with antique shops, boutiques and restaurants that nod to its German Heritage. Outside of Main Street, you’ll find a slew of gorgeous wineries and picturesque farms, perfect for picking peaches or pumpkins depending on the season.
Ben and I have been all about the road trips this year and have spent hours researching unique places to stay within a few hours of Austin. I came across Blue Skies Retro Resort and couldn’t believe that such a cool spot was just a hop, skip and a jump from us and right outside of one of my favorite cities in Texas. The second I saw it, I knew we had to check it out and a few weeks later we found ourselves pulling into their gravel drive and gawking over the beautiful retro signage that welcomed us in.
The resort was so pretty and consisted of five Shasta trailers all with unique names like Miss. Mary Longbottom and Miss. Estelle. They’re far enough apart where you don’t hear your neighbors, but close enough for it to feel like a welcoming community.
Once we arrived, we quickly ran over to the trailer to check out our new digs. The resort provided us with a door code, so no face-to-face check in was needed which we loved. Once we were in, we were greeted with a full sized bed with gorgeous palm print bedding, a kitchen with microwave and fridge, a separate seating area and an ensuite bathroom. There was also a TV with free Netflix (praise) and a record player with a slew of country records to choose from!
About 20 feet from our trailer was a pool, a covered pavilion with lounge chairs and communal grills. The best part of the amenity package was that each trailer came with it’s own separate private bathroom. The bathrooms were located on a palm tree covered path and each door was labeled with one of the five trailer names. We found ours, plugged in our code, and opened the door to find more of that same pretty palm print on the walls (trying to convince Ben to let me put this in our apartment!), a spacious two person vanity, separate bathroom and an outdoor shower that was surrounded by greenery. I couldn’t believe how much was behind that tiny door!
Once we were done exploring, we unpacked and ran to get dinner. We picked up some sandwiches and wine in town and spent the night sitting out on our private yard, listening to Waylon Jennings on the record player and watching the sunset.
The next morning we woke up with a day full of adventures planned – we were going to head into Fredericksburg for breakfast, hit a farm for pumpkin picking (or just photos of us holding pumpkins – lets be real lol) and then a winery for vino and lunch. After were were done, we were going to head back to the trailer for an afternoon of reading and relaxing.
Our plans slightly fell apart when we woke up to a major wind storm and low temps – crazy for a September day in Texas! So we nixed our morning plans and hung out at the resort until early afternoon and then headed into town.
We found the cutest little shop for coffee on Main Street called Caliche and then stopped at Jenschke Orchards before heading to Signor Vineyards. The weather had cleared up by then and we were able to grab a table for two under a shaded oak tree and order two flights of wine to try.
Once we finished up, we drove into town for a quick and casual dinner and then rushed back to the resort to catch our final sunset. We turned Waylon back on the record player and enjoyed our final night under the stars.
The next morning we packed up, said goodbye to Miss. Mary Longbottom and started our trip back home. As we were driving we saw a sign for Enchanted Rock and decided to make a pitstop. Enchanted Rock is only about 20 minutes from the resort, so it would be such an easy day trip as well!
While they have a few different paths to choose from, we opted for one that took us to the top of the rock and was about a 45 minute walk each way. Even though we forgot sunscreen…and water #worsthikersever…it was such a pretty view and fun experience.
